Iraq will ask Iran to send the world assurance message that it wouldn't close the Strait of Hormuz, the country's Oil Minister Abdul Kareem Luaiby said Wednesday.

Iran has threatened to close the vital waterway if the West decide to impose sanctions on its exports.

"I am traveling to Tehran tomorrow, in my capacity as president of OPEC and the Iraqi oil minister to ask the Iranian to send assurance to the world [that Iran won't close the Strait of Hormuz]," Luaiby told reporters here.
