After President Donald Trump’s labor secretary pick, Andy Puzder, announced his nomination withdrawal, it seems the pushback against the president’s unfit cabinet choices is finally making a difference.
The fast-food executive’s nomination was vehemently opposed by unions and labor groups, who highlighted allegations that employees of his company were victims of wage theft and other workplace violations, Mother Jones reports.
These accusations led to at least seven Republican senators rescinding their support for Puzder, according to The Huffington Post.
The public outcry against his nomination became even stronger after mainstream media and the Senate got ahold of an old taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that featured Puzder’s ex-wife accusing him of spousal abuse.
Although his ex-wife, Lisa Fierstein, has since recanted the abuse allegations, her vivid recollection of the torment she endured is difficult to simply sweep under the rug.
“The most frightening thing was leaving because once I made that break and once I made it public, and remember my ex-husband was a public figure and everyone knew him and knew what he was doing, and once I made that public, he vowed revenge,” Fierstein said 27 years ago. “He said, ‘I will see you in the gutter. This will never be over. You will pay for this.’”
Amid all of this scandal, the National Review tried to shift the narrative as it became more apparent that the nomination was going to fall through. They decided to go with the “he’s too soft on immigration” excuse as the main driving force behind Puzder’s inevitable demise.
This latest setback comes just days after Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned from his post in the midst of a heated scandal surrounding his contacts with Russian officials.
Most of Trump’s cabinet picks have been riddled with controversy, including Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who were both confirmed despite strong public opposition.
However, Trump’s dysfunctional administration, thus far, has proven to be embarrassingly incompetent with countless egregious mistakes, blatant lies, holy war conspiracy theories, unethical stunts, and so on.
The GOP's abandonment of Puzder could symbolize that Republicans are finally seeing that it’s time they pull the reins on Trump and these unqualified, bottom-of-the-barrel cabinet picks.
