Then And Now: What Gaza Looks Like A Year After Conflict With Israel

At the current rate of progress, reconstruction of homes, schools and hospitals in the Gaza Strip after last summer's offensive will take at least a century.

On July 8, 2014, Israel launched military operation “Protective Edge” in the Gaza Strip, a 50-day conflict that killed nearly 2,251 Palestinians, mostly civilians, including 551 children, and 66 Israeli Defense Forces soldiers.

The onslaught left more than 100,000 buildings in Gaza damaged or destroyed. Rebuilding has been slow, partly because of political infighting and mainly due to restrictions on imports of construction materials into the embattled region.

In fact, at the current rate of progress, reconstruction of homes, schools and hospitals in the Strip after last summer's offensive will take at least 100 years, according to a February report released by international charity organization Oxfam.

Aid agencies recently stated the blockade has not only hampered construction work in Gaza, but it has also helped create “some of the highest unemployment and aid dependency levels in the world.”
