Judy Nir Mozes Shalom said the scariest response came from her husband, and that she hoped the whole issue wouldn’t end in divorce.

The wife of a top Israeli politician has come under fire on Twitter for posting what many say was a racist joke about United States President Barack Obama.

Judy Nir Mozes Shalom, married to Israeli Interior Minister Silvan Shalom – who was recently placed in charge of strategic dialogue with the United States – wrote, “Do u know what Obama Coffee is? Black and weak.”

Predictably, her tweet caused a stir online and she quickly deleted it. Screengrabs are, however, available.

 Subsequently, she posted an apology.

Mozes further expressed her regret by tweeting in Hebrew, “President Obama I shouldnt have written the inappropriate joke I heard. I like people no matter about their race and religion.”

She added, according to Haaretz, the “scariest” response she received came from her husband, saying that she hoped the whole issue wouldn’t end in divorce.

There couldn’t have been a worse timing for Mozes’ tweet, especially when the diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Israel are already strained over a number of issues, including Obama’s disagreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s race-baiting during his Knesset re-election campaign.

In addition, her racist comments come at a time when multiple protests have been organized in Israel over mistreatment of migrants from Africa, primarily Ethiopian Jews.

Also, this wasn’t the first time Mozes was criticized for her inflammatory statements. In 2012, she had to resign from a position with the UNICEF after she made inappropriate comments on Facebook regarding her country's military actions in Gaza.
