Historians revealed hard evidence that the settlers in the American colony at Jamestown Virginia resorted to cannibalism to survive the harsh winter of 1609.

Researchers said damages to the skull of a 14 year old girl they named "Jane" shows signs that she was dismembered, and then eaten.

An account by one of the settlers recalled how they were forced eat their horses, dogs, cats, mice and snakes in order to survive the harsh conditions.

Researchers said Jane was probably not the only case of cannibalism.

It's not known if Jane was murdered or died of natural causes.
