From high school senior to mayor!
For most 18 year olds, managing their social life takes up most of their life. But not for this 18 year old called Jeremy Minnier who was elected as the Mayor of small town of Aredale, Iowa.
A high school senior whose studies included everything from discussions on agriculture, civics to water management, who plays the sax in the school band as well as runs a small farm – yes, he does all of it. And yes, he is only 18.
Born and raised at Aredale, Iowa, Jeremy has defeated the 76 year old incumbent mayor Virgil Homer. The residents of the town are very happy with their choice and say that Jeremy’s mayor ship is likely to bring freshness in the 74-population town.
"We have a little hope for the future," town councilor and resident Deb DeBerg told news agencies, while adding that "Some fresh blood may see things differently." In his part, Minnier says he is proud of the home town people. "This is my hometown. Born and raised here. Proud of it all the way, I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else.”
He also has some serious plans for the town. And some of them involve, getting down and dirty with the residents. “Being the mayor doesn't mean that you just sit back and tell other people what to do. You gotta be there helping. I'm gonna be sweeping the streets out there with a broom and shovel just like they are.” He also has a plan for dealing with one of the biggest problems of the town, ‘One of the main things right now is our septic systems in our homes as they're not up to state codes,”, while also adding landscaping as one of the things he’s looking forward to do under his reign as the mayor.
The 18-year old mayor even has fans in the form of his high school principal Steve Madson who said that he’s an inspiration to the young kids. While even his fellow students are not shy of echoing the same sentiment, adding that, ‘it's a pretty cool thing to have going on at our school.’
So what happens now that Aredale has an 18 year old who now works as a mayor? Well Mayor Minnier is hoping to change the fortune of this small town in Iowa. He’s a guy who likes doing it all and has this to say about his work, ‘It's not a job when you wake up every morning and just love what you do.’
