One does not mess with a French woman, especially one as strong willed and formidable as former first lady Valerie Trierweiler.
Valérie Trierweiler was the unmarried ‘companion’ of French President Francois Hollande for eight years, a state of affairs that came to an end following allegations in Closer magazine that her partner had been having an affair with French actress Julie Gayet.
The former first lady spent 10 days in hospital supposedly fighting depression and shock.
Two weeks after the revelation, French president François Hollande confirmed that he had separated from his partner of seven years Valerie Trierweiler.
“I wish to make it known that I have ended the life together that I shared with Valerie Trierweiler,” he said.
She may be heartbroken, depressed and even furious , but she is back on her feet and winding up long standing commitments. One such commitment has taken her all the way to Mumbai, India in support of the work of the French charity Action Against Hunger.
Even though she is no longer the first lady, , she is travelling in style and has left the President to deal with the separation announcements and all the nitty gritty of a botched up relationship in front of the masses.
Ms Trierweiler is also said to have negotiated a financial settlement with Mr Hollande to compensate for loss of status and earnings since she abandoned part of her journalistic career when he became president 20 months ago.
So, while her erring former partner is facing the crowds back home over the status of his former and future relationships; she is acting as an epitome of selflessness, smiling at the cameras, visiting poor children and even tasting their food.
Some call it her attempt at image rehabilitation, but whatever the case may be, she has been smart about it.
Even though there are times when her mask slips and one can see the anguish she is going through.
