Kurdish Refugees Then and Now: Photos of People Fleeing ISIS Evoke Bitter Memories Of Saddam Hussein's Dictatorship

Not much has changed for the Kurdish community over the years after Saddam Hussein.

Refugees

Life for the Kurdish population in the Middle East is as miserable right now as it was under Saddam Hussein in the 1980s.

Just as the madman’s use of chemical weapons summoned Western military intervention in 2003, the atrocities carried out by notorious militants of the Islamic State or ISIS have spurred the United States and its allies to use military force in Iraq and Syria.

Reuters photographers have chronicled Kurdish refugee crises over the years and the images that they have captured show that not much has changed for the Kurdish population over the past three decades.

While pictures from 1991 show men, women and children trying to save their possessions and burying their dead in a refugee camp in Cukurca, Turkey, just across the border from Iraq, photos taken this year in October show familiar scenes.
