Wobbly Emir Of Kuwait Looks Drunk While The Iranian President Helps Him Walk On The Red Carpet

Jun 5, 2014: It was a landmark visit. However, something rather odd happened when the Kuwaiti Emir arrived in Tehran on Sunday.

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah arrived in Tehran on Sunday to start a landmark visit to Iran focused on mending fences between the two countries often at odds with each other.

However, the Sheikh’s Guard of Honor ceremony at Tehran Airport caused a stir after a video of his awkward arrival went viral on the internet.

The emir appears to be quite wobbly so much so that he cannot even walk his way down the red carpet without Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s help.

While many claim that the emir is drunk, there are others who think that the man can’t walk properly because he is an elderly person.

Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah is 84.

Kuwait-Iran Relations:

For the past three years, ties between Iran and the Gulf states have remained strained due to the Syrian civil war.

While Tehran supports President Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-ruled Gulf states sponsor the rebels with arms.

The Kuwaiti Sheikh’s two-day trip follows visits by Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif’s to Kuwait in a bid to continue thawing relations with Gulf nations. Moderate president Hassan Rouhani promises to improve relations with Arab monarchies after he came to power in August last year.
