The Euro 2016 soccer tournament came to an end with Portugal beating the host team France 1-0 with an extra-time goal.
Thousands of French fans got emotional on the street after the match, and one video of a heart-warming exchange between a Portuguese and French fan is going viral.
The video posted on Reddit has attracted hundreds of comments with people calling it the “best of football.”
The clip, apparently recorded from someone’s cell phone, shows a Frenchman sobbing uncontrollably over his team’s defeat — but not for long. A young Portuguese boy soon walked up to the man, grabbed his hand and shook it in empathy. The French fan gave the little boy a thumbs up and kissed him on the head as the boy patted him on the back. The two had only taken a couple of steps forward before the French man embraced the little boy.
The Portugal supporter appeared to be rather worried about his newly made French friend and he looked around with a concerned expression .
The top comment on Reddit reads: “ Wow, that kid's sense of empathy is simply beautiful.”
However, a few internet users brought a nasty twist to the heart-warming incident as they wrote, “I bet he stole his wallet.” People instantly began posting racist comments as one Reddit user added in his two cents saying, “He’s Portuguese, not Brazilian” and another noted, “From heartwarming to racism in 4 comments.”
Regardless of what vile people spewed online about the video, what the boy did for the grieving French supporter was undoubtedly kind and empathetic beyond his years.
Here’s what Twitter users said about the exchange:
Great moment. That fan has more class than the majority of Portuguese fans twice his age. @Mutes_official— Richard Lewis (@RLewisReports) July 11, 2016
Sport should be about friendship between teams. This is good. https://t.co/eRPjxgq2UP— John Beattie (@BBCJohnBeattie) July 11, 2016
