A 15-year-old year rape victim in the Maldives has been sentenced to 100 lashes as punishment for having pre-marital sex.
Police laid charges against the teenager after investigating claims that she was repeatedly raped by her stepfather and got pregnant. The girl gave birth to her stepfather’s baby, who was then allegedly killed by the brutal man and was buried under an outdoor shower area of their house.
During the investigation, the police discovered that the girl had consensual sex with another man that lead her to this punishment which is in accordance with the Shariah Law and apparently not related to the rape case that still has to go to trial.
The girl will be flogged when she turns 18 but in the meantime she has to spend eight months under house arrest, The Independent reported.
This incident has prompted widespread condemnation. Ahmed Faiz, a researcher with Amnesty International, said flogging was "cruel, degrading and inhumane" and urged the authorities to abolish it.
He said, “This is an absolute outrage, regardless of the reason for her charges. Victims of rape or other forms of sexual abuse should be given counseling and support – not charged with a crime.”
“We urge the Maldivian authorities to immediately drop all charges against the girl, ensure her safety and provide her with all necessary support.”
Maldives is an archipelago Muslim country packed with immaculate beaches which attract uncountable international tourists every year but still it is becoming more and more conservative and continues to allow flogging women as punishment despite requests from the United Nations to ban it.
