Authorities are working on confirming the identity of a man arrested late Monday in Ohio who is believed to be responsible for setting off a bomb at a Santa Monica synagogue last week.
The man is believed to be 60-year-old Ron Hirsch, who Cleveland Heights police arrested after a concerned citizen, believed to be a rabbi in the area, called police.
While authorities initially believed the blast was an industrial accident, they now say an explosion device was planted and that items found at the scene were linked to Hirsch.
Jewish groups have said they don’t believe anti-Semitism was necessarily behind that attack, and investigators have no motive yet for why Hirsch, known for spending time at synagogues and other Jewish community centers seeking charity, would commit such a crime.
Hirsch is wanted on state charges of possession of a destructive device and unrelated local charges.
