A Pennsylvania man is facing numerous charges after police raided his home and found 12 girls, including a teenager who was reportedly "gifted" to him by her parents in return for financial assistance.
Lee Kaplan, 51, allegedly was given the oldest girl, now 18, after helping out her parents four years ago. The 18-year-old is the mother of two other girls found in the home, a 3-year-old and 6-month-old.
Police said the teen's parents admit handing over their daughter to Kaplan, who now faces charges of sexually assaulting this teenager.
The parents of the teenager, Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus, have also been arrested. The father tried to proclaim his innocence, claiming that he did look up online the legal implications of giving away his daughter. Among the assortment of charges against the Stoltzfuses is conspiracy of statutory sexual assault.
Kaplan is being held for statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor.
With her parents allegedly complicit in this disgusting scheme, the teen, along with other victims, may never have been able to escape the prison had it not been for the vigilance of Kaplan's neighbor.
“I saw a couple girls last week standing in the driveway. They just looked unhappy and sad,” Jen Betz, the neighbor, told WPVI. “I’ve been telling my husband for years something isn’t right, something isn’t right.”
Her concern was raised by the behavior of the girls. Betz said that the girls often seemed "fearful" and would run back to the house whenever "the male" who lived there went to the door.
The police are trying to trace the parents of other girls who were held in Kaplan's home. This is no easy task, given that many of these children do not have birth records or Social Security cards.
Meanwhile, Stoltzfus claims that, apart from the 3-year-old and 6-month-old fathered by Kaplan, the other nine children also belonged to them. Authorities currently do not have any evidence if the other nine girls were sexually assaulted as well.
