I guess karma is real! A man who had been guarding a “Muslim-free” gun range in Oklahoma reportedly accidentally shot himself on the store's property.
Now, one of his associates has accused the Muskogee County sheriff of painting him and his comrades as “ignorant hillbillies.”
The name of the clumsy man has not been released, but he is reportedly a part of a group that has been volunteering to stand guard at the Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear store in Oktaha after the store’s owner received death threats for placing a sign on the door that denies Muslims from entering the establishment.
Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson said he had seen the men guarding the store prior to the incident and he could tell they weren’t well versed in gun safety by the way they held their weapons.
“It’s like the Clampetts have come to town,” the sheriff said in reference to the classic television show, The Beverly Hillbillies.
“We just believe in people’s constitutional rights, and we’re here to make sure they get them,” one of the men guarding the store said as he maintained he had nothing personal against Muslims.
“I am a combat veteran, I will fight to the death for someone’s right to practice whatever religion they want to. I’m not here because of that. I’m here because when people start resorting to violence, we can’t allow that.”
One of the store’s owners Nicole Mayhorn explained the shooting incident from her perspective on Facebook, claiming the man who shot himself was not a guard...but a close friend.
Some users responded to Mayhorn's post by questioning why her friend needed a gun to fix a door, a very valid question in this case.
The real question here, though, isn't whether a gun was necessary to fix a door... but what I'd really like to know is how these men expect not to be portrayed as hillbillies when they are protecting racist/discriminatory businesses and shooting themselves in the process? Is that somehow not textbook hillbilly behavior?
