A man in Saudi Arabia was caught on video slapping a veiled woman as dozens looked on.

The incident reportedly occurred following an altercation outside a store in a downtown area in Jeddah. The woman was hit so hard that she fell to the ground.

Almost a day after the shocking footage went viral on various social media websites, the man, now identified as a local shop vendor, was arrested, a Mecca Police spokesman confirmed to the Saudi Gazette on Tuesday.

The 40-second clip prompted a lot of backlash online. Saudi Internet users not only denounced the actions of the man but also criticized onlookers for standing by and doing nothing to help the woman.

One blogger, Abu Omar Hussein, called on the government “to review policies allowing women to trade in close proximity with men,” according to Arab News.

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, the governor of Mecca, also condemned the incident and ordered police to investigate the case and keep him informed of developments.
