The evening began to unravel when the brothers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar encountered Sean Collier, a 26-year-old police officer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The brothers, armed with handguns and a rifle, allegedly lobbed explosive devices, some resembling crude grenades. The older one was shot dead and Dzokhar was eventually caught by the police.
As soon as the suspect was arrested, a storm of news stories regarding the brother’s ethnicity, religion and country of origin began to emerge. One that has surfaced most recently is the fact that the older and more radical of the duo, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was once kicked out of the Islamic Society of Boston in Cambridge, Mass.
The institution confirmed the fact on Saturday that both the suspects were ‘occasional’ visitors to their Faith Community. They also added that during their visits, neither of them exhibited violent behavior. However, several news reports have emerged saying that Tamerlan Tsarnaev objected to a sermon in Cambridge mosque in which the religious speaker aka Imam compared the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) to Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tamerlan accused the speaker of being a hypocrite and called him an unbeliever aka kafir for comparing the Prophet (PBUH) with a non-Muslim. To which the speaker replied that Tamerlan was himself a hypocrite and the congregation told him to leave the mosque.
The outburst was indeed significant but no one from the mosque ever thought that Tamerlan would turn out to be a mass murderer.
In the link below, several people from the Boston mosque give their separate accounts of how the Tsarnaev brothers used to be like when they came for prayers:
The accounts suggest that both the brothers were apparently not practicing Muslims until last year when all of a sudden they began developing radical views on religion. Indeed, the facts regarding their present religious beliefs and former practices are quite contradictory and have to go through more investigation to know their motives behind the attacks.
