Halloween Trayvon Martin

Social media had a field day when the above picture depicting two men dressed up as Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for Halloween made its online rounds this weekend.

Media outlets subsequently did some digging of their own to determine how ‘harmless’ the costumes and those donning them were.

Twitter reactions can be seen below.

The country has not yet recovered from the highly controversial and tragic death of an unarmed black teenager (Martin) shot dead in Florida last year by a neighborhood watch captain (Zimmerman).

The killing and subsequent trial sparked nation-wide proteststhis year and reignited America’s race and civil rights debates.

According to the Smoking Gun, the men in the photograph are Florida residents in their early 20’s.

The picture was initially uploaded (now removed) on Friday by Caitlin Cimeno – on both Facebook and Instagram. She captioned the photo with “Happy Halloween from Zimmerman and trayvon J”

Greg Cimeno portrayed Zimmerman and William Filene is the skinny white guy with a really bad face-paint job. The website also revealed Filene’s criminal record regarding car theft.

Building a case to discredit Caitlin Cimeno and silence those that may have found the picture harmless, The Smoking Gun referenced Cimeno’s facebook post from August 2013. She apparently posted a photo of an African American girl wearing a t-shirt that read “Black Girls Rock.”

She wrote, “First of all, sorry Hun but mommy lied to you & secondly if I was wearing a shirt that said something like the truth 'white girls rock' I would be stared at and called a racist cracker.”

This ‘Blackface Costume’ photograph is reminiscent of a recent social media trend known as ‘Trayvoning ‘, where people posted pictures of themselves playing dead on the ground.
