Denise Garrido is a Canadian beauty pageant contestant who is unfortunately going to be remembered as the most short-lived Miss Universe Canada ever.
Garrido, 26, was named as the winner of the Miss Universe Canada 2013 pageant on May 25. She was overwhelmed, happy and felt like she had finally achieved her dreams. But only two days later she discovered the devastating news that all that happened on Saturday’s event was just a mistake.
The organizers of the event informed that because of a typing error, Denise Garrido was announced as the winner of the competition when the actual winner was the first runner-up Riza Santos.
It’s usually a highly emotional ride for beauty pageant contestants to make it to the top five in a competition as big as Miss Universe Canada. Ladies competing against each other are mostly very ambitious and focused. Their entire lives revolve around taking care of their health and looks for which they often go for vigorous diets and give up on many things they wish to do.
Denise Garrido’s feelings are quite understandable when she said, “I was in a daze. Is this reality? I am like in a dream right now.” And when she found out that she was actually a third runner-up and not the winner, she said, “Embarassed. I am embarrassed because all of my friends, my family and town were celebrating and sending congratulatory text messages.”
Though the organizers have not talked to the media directly, they have however posted an apology on their website: “We made a mistake, a human mistake, one we did not ask for.”
And they also mentioned that both the ladies handled the situation wisely: “The words, actions and grace of Denise Garrido is a reflection of the kind of integrity and true beauty of these young women. The true winner of the pageant, Riza Santos, accepted the news with perfect humility and equal grace.”
Well, Garrido has indeed shown a lot of spirit here. What do you think? You can shareyour thoughts in the comments section.
