Mom Fakes Daughter’s Cancer, Steals Donation Money

Winkler, cancer, mom

A Utah mother was recently arrested after she allegedly lied about her child having leukemia so that she could steal money donated towards her daughter’s “treatment”.  Abbreail Winkler was charged Tuesday on a single count of communications fraud. She should also be charged on one count of “being a really bad mother”.

Allegedly, Winkler announced her daughter’s leukemia to friends and family around her home in Vernal, Utah and requested $3,000 in donations. The exact amount donated to Winkler is unknown, but if Winkler posted her request on Kickstarter, I can only presume she  made 12 million dollars from the scam.

The “healthy” daughter is now with her divorced father. The father claims he had no knowledge of the scam. This is odd, because it seems like a 4-year-old girl would bring up the fact that mommy was making her say she has cancer.

Derick Winkler is, apparently, the chilliest man on the planet as he hopes Abreail Winkler is not punished for the sake of the daughter. He said he hopes his ex-wife receives, “just a slap on the wrist.”

Now, I’m no lawyer. But I have to imagine that when you lie about your daughter’s leukemia to scam people out of money, you don’t get the daughter back. Maybe the dad just really doesn’t want to take on sole custody of the kid? If so, I feel even worse for the little girl.

If convicted, Winkler could face up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000. Seems kind of low. Like, I know for a fact that some lady on Law & Order: SVU got like 30 years for similar shenanigans.
