Facebook post saves woman and child held captive in Utah
A WOMAN and child held captive in a Utah home were rescued after the mother was able to sneak on to Facebook and plead for help.
Their alleged captor, Troy Critchfield, 33, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, sodomy, child abuse and animal cruelty, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Police said Critchfield had held the woman and her 17-month-old son captive for about four or five days, taking her mobile phone and keeping her locked in a home in Sandy, Utah, south of Salt Lake City.
The woman, who was not identified, was able to sneak into a closet with a laptop on Saturday and post a Facebook update where she said she feared she would be "dead by morning".
Friends and family of the woman saw the posting and called police, KSTU-TV reported.
The suspect refused to let officers into the home. He eventually allowed the woman to come into the room, but refused to let police officers speak to her alone.
"I asked if everything was OK and she shook her head, 'No,'" officers wrote in the statement, according to KSTU-TV.
The woman told police that she had been choked every time she tried to leave the home and that the family's dog was starving outside, the station reported.
She also told police she had been hit, sodomised and that her young son has been "thrown," the Tribune reported.
