In a recent deplorable Islamophobic attack, a stranger set fire to a Muslim woman in New York City Saturday night.
According to police, the woman was wearing traditional Muslim clothing when the incident took place, which prompted them to treat the investigation as a hate crime.
The 35-year-old unnamed victim was reportedly window-shopping on Fifth Avenue when she felt heat on her arm and saw her blouse had been set ablaze.
She turned around to see a man standing near her with a lighter in his hand just before he ran away, according to NBC News.
Luckily, the woman was able to extinguish the flames, and emerged physically unharmed.
It is likely no coincidence that the heinous crime occurred less than 24 hours before the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“I would obviously be concerned because it’s symptomatic of the overall rise in Islamophobic sentiment in our society,” said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “That’s based on the spike across the country in hate crimes and hate incidents, in recent days and over the past year."
Unfortunately, this type of behavior has become normalized as innocent Muslims in the United States and abroad have been blamed for acts committed by the Islamic State.
It goes without saying, but it's high time for people to realize that hurting the innocent and vulnerable fixes nothing, and only gives the real "bad guys" exactly what they want.
