When asked at Sunday's presidential debate about the issue of Islamophobia prevailing in the United States, Donald Trump said Muslims who enter the country must “report when they see something going on.”
“One thing we have to do is we have to make sure that because there is a problem, whether we like it or not — and we could be very politically correct, but whether we like it or not, there is a problem and we have to be sure that Muslims come in and report when they see something going on,” Trump said. “When they see hatred going on, they have to report it.”
Trump is referring to the debunked notion that Muslims do not report suspicious activities related to terrorism when they see them. After the San Bernardino attack, Trump concocted a wild conspiracy theory claiming that American Muslims knew about the attacks but were unwilling to turn against the terrorists.
“In San Bernardino, many people saw the bombs all over the apartment of the two people that killed 14 and wounded many, many people. Horribly wounded. Never be the same. Muslims have to report the problems when they see them,” Trump previously said.
He repeated similar claims at the debate, claims that are demonstrably lies.
And the FBI reports Muslims already inform them about any suspicious activities. According to Reuters, FBI Director James Comey said, “They do not want people committing violence, either in their community or in the name of their faith, and so some of our most productive relationships are with people who see things and tell us things who happen to be Muslim.”
When Trump has made false claims in the past, he has blamed them on “political correctness.” This time, however, he is insinuating that Muslims actually sympathize with ISIS terrorists.
The absurd response has given rise to #MuslimsReportStuff in which people have begun following Trump’s suggestion to the letter.
