19-year-old Mutlu Kaya, popularly known as Diyarbakir’s nightingale, is not only a talented Turkish singer but a determined young woman as well.
Kaya was shot in the head last month for apparently appearing in a talent show that is the Turkish equivalent of Britain's Got Talent.
She had been warned by conservatives in her community, including her own relatives, against appearing on the show but she paid no heed and performed.
Soon afterward, she was shot in her head through a window of her home in the orthodox Kurdish town in the Diyarbakir province.
Police later arrested Kaya's ex-boyfriend Veysi Ercan and charged him with attempted murder of the singer.
She has once again beaten all the odds and come out of a coma after a whole month.
"She has been moved out of intensive care and into a private room. Her overall health is good. She has regained consciousness and is able to communicate with us,” Ulas Aktas, a brain surgeon at the Gazi Yasargil Training and Research Hospital in Diyarbakir, said.
But her ordeal isn’t quite over yet.
"She is conscious now and can communicate with us. She has no neurosurgical problems at the moment. But she needs to go through a long period of physiotherapy and rehabilitation," her doctor stated.
That is a setback for a girl who aims to be the leading singer of her country. But the brave fighter that she is, Kaya is making swift recovery.
She is now able to consume liquids and soft food, and even moves about with the help of a wheelchair a few times a day.
Here’s wishing her a full recovery.
