Naji Jerf was a journalist and activist known for his documentaries describing violence and abuse in the Islamic State-controlled territories.

Naji Jerf, a prominent Syrian journalist, filmmaker and father of two, was shot twice in the head by assailants in an unknown car outside of a local restaurant in the Turkish city of Gaziantep.

Jerf worked for Raqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, an independent group that exposes human rights abuses in Raqa, ISIS’ de facto capital in Syria. He was directing a film about the atrocities of the Islamic State within the territories it held.

“We believe it was ISIL that did this,” said Abu Ibrahim al-Raqqawi, a spokesman for RBSS. “Either they thought Naji was one of our members, or they simply did it because they knew how much our guys loved him. Nowhere is safe for us now.”
