Last week, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave us a rare and fresh insight on history – or the world's most ignorant rewriting of history.
The leader of Israel practically absolved Nazis of the Holocaust, and belittled the sufferings of millions of Jews. Bibi claimed that it was the grand mufti of Palestine who had convinced Hitler to exterminate Jews.
Not only did this whip up a storm on Twitter, where many blamed the grand mufti for climate change and Kardashians, it also had German Chancellor Angela Merkel writing the most awkward press statement in history, affirming that the genocide was Germany’s doing.
But now Netanyahu apparently came back to his senses and decided that for this one issue, he will try to be on the right side of history. In a Facebook post, he said that he had never meant to implicate the mufti for the murder of 6 million Jews.
"In no way did I intend to absolve Hitler of his responsibility for the Holocaust," he said. "The decision to move from a policy of deporting Jews to the Final Solution was made by the Nazis and was not dependent on outside influence. The Nazis saw in the Mufti a collaborator, but they did not need him to decide on the systematic destruction of European Jewry, which began in June 1941."
