New York Times To India: We're Sorry!

A cartoon about India's space mission ignites a social media flurry.

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

A New York Times apology!

The NYT published the cartoon touching on India's relatively inexpensive trip into space.   The image showed a farmer with a cow knocking at the door of a room marked Elite Space Club. Two men sit reading a newspaper on India's accomplishment.

The cartoon caused outrage and accusations of racism. Some posted their displeasure directly on the NYT Facebook page.

Others took to Twitter.

The total cost of India's space mission was around 4.5bn rupees, approximately $74 million. This makes it one of the cheapest interplanetary space missions ever. The cartoon was carried with an article titled India‚Äôs Budget Mission to Mars.

Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor of the New York Times, wrote in a Facebook post that a "large number of readers" had complained about the cartoon.
