Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi Awarded Global Citizen (Video)

Democratic opposition leader of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the 2012 Global Citizen Award during a ceremony in New York. The award recognizes people who work internationally to tackle global challenges.

She paid tribute to unknown fighters for democracy in her country. “Tonight I must pay tribute to my colleagues whose names are unknown to the world,” said Suu Kyi.

She visited UN headquarters and met with UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon. This is her first trip to Washington since her release from house arrest. Her last stay in the United States was in the 1970s as a U.N. employee. Earlier this week she met President Barack Obama and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Music legend Quincy Jones and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were amongst those who were also awarded.
