A North Carolina church is being criticized for an email it sent to an African American member requesting ‘people of color’ to not serve as greeters for morning services.
According to WBTV, Carmen Thomas received a request from Pastor Makeda Pennycooke of ‘Freedom House Church’ asking for white people only to serve on the front doors. The reason was also provided in the email saying the church was anticipating an increase in the number of people attending congregations over the following weeks and they needed the ‘best of the best people’ on front doors for ‘first impressions.’
For Carmen Thomas, the document sent by Pastor Pennycooke, who is herself a black woman, was appalling and hurtful. She had started visiting the church because of its diversity and the e-mail was certainly pointing towards racism.
Here’s what people said after the news was broken:
Shame on Freedom House Church.— Courtney Brown (@Courtney_TheOne) September 3, 2013
Freedom house church? But whites only at the door? Email sent by the PASTOR? Just wow and people still go to this church?— Alinda for now (@BlkPhoenix66) September 3, 2013
After the WBTV contacted the church, it was confirmed that the controversial email had indeed been sent to several members. However, the pastor admitted it was a mistake to point out a specific community. An apology was later issued.
The Freedom House Church told the news channel, “The pastors have been meeting with staff and church members to confirm their commitment to diversity and to ensure nothing like this happens again.”
