Officer Killed In Funeral Procession Motorcycle Crash

One of the motorcycle officers involved in a collision while riding in a funeral procession in Torrance has died. 44-year-old Andrew Garton died from injuries sustain in a collision during the procession for another officer in Torrance about 12:30 p.m. Thursday near 227th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, according the Hawthorne Police Department.

One of the motorcycle officers involved in a collision while riding in a funeral procession in Torrance has died.

44-year-old Andrew Garton died from injuries sustain in a collision during the procession for another officer in Torrance about 12:30 p.m. Thursday near 227th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, according the Hawthorne Police Department.

The collision involved Garton and Sgt. Rex Fowler, an officer from the El Segundo Police Department, said Torrance Police Department Sgt. Jeremiah Hart. Both officers were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

"The officer from the Hawthorne Police Department was thrown into oncoming traffic and he struck a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Hawthorne in the number one lane," Hart told KNX radio.

Garton was a 4 year veteran of the Hawthorne Police Department. He was married with 2 sons.

The funeral procession was for Manhattan Beach police Officer Mark Vasquez, who died of cancer.
