An Ohio gun group plans to buy George Zimmerman a new gun, because federal prosecutors have asked that the weapon he used to kill Trayvon Martin not be given back to him in case the federal government brings a case against Zimmerman under federal civil rights legislation. The Buckeye Firearms Foundation is raising money to furnish Zimmerman with a gun, not just because they like Zimmerman and think it was totally okay for him to kill Trayvon Martin, but, well, let’s let the Ohio-based gun group explain:

“This is outrageous. Mr. Holder is this nation's chief law enforcement officer. It is his job to uphold the laws, to support and defend our system of justice…This move to prevent Mr. Zimmerman from claiming his property is an unacceptable abuse of power. And the threats of federal charges on civil rights grounds is little more than blatant pandering for political gain.

Moreover, based on statements he and others have made recently, Holder hopes to use this as the first step toward renewing this administration’s attack on gun rights. . . . George Zimmerman has every right to get his property back.

And if Eric Holder chooses to deny Mr. Zimmerman that right, Buckeye Firearms Foundation will remedy the matter by purchasing a NEW FIREARM for him, including a holster, flashlight, and any other gear he wants.”

Alright, while this entire letter breaks the idiot-meter in terms of forming a cogent argument, it is probably good fundraising fodder, and that is the main point here. The “Donate” button is placed prominently at the top of the page, three lines before the bottom, and just below that at the end of the page. This is less about making a political point than it is about drumming up right-wing nut jobs who still aren’t sure which country Obama was born in and use the media swirl around Zimmerman and Trayvon to raise money.

But it should be noted that the argument around Eric Holder’s motivations for not giving Zimmerman his gun back don’t hold water. We do in fact have laws that allow the federal government to bring charges despite what happens in state courts if it is believed that the crime committed was racially motivated. The State Department is considering bringing such a charge against Zimmerman, and given that Zimmerman could once again be up for a second-degree murder charge, his weapon is a crucial piece of evidence.

I skipped the opening of the letter, but it amounts to “we are a nation of laws and those laws must be obeyed.” A few paragraphs later, this obeying of laws is a blatant political power grab. What political power is being grabbed is mostly left up to the reader’s imagination, but the 6 year fear of Obama taking away guns is invoked. When and how that is supposed to happen is left ambiguous (because it’s never going to happen). The fact that the Obama Administration is detaining a single gun doesn’t mean anything in terms of its respect for the second amendment, but it makes for good fundraising fodder for right-wing gun groups.
