Opposing Groups Plan Proposition 8 Rallies

Two competing groups will host rallies Saturday to express support or disdain for a federal ruling striking down Proposition 8, a voter-approved initiative that banned gay marriage in California. The Queer Justice League of Atlanta will host their event in support of the ruling 12:30 p.m. at Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta. The National Organization for Marriage will host an event at 2 p.m. at the Georgia Capitol opposing the overturned law. A federal judge in San Francisco overturned Proposition 8 Thursday, deeming it unconstitutional. Proposition 8, aka the California Marriage Protection Act, was approved in 2008 by 52 percent of California voters. The measure added a new provision to the California Constitution, which provides that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
