Timing is everything when it comes to show business. But sometimes a timely planned action may easily backfire. This turned out to be precisely the situation for ‘Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden’.
‘Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden’, a made-for- TV movie based on the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, got released two days before the elections, and turned out to be a total flop. It was widely panned by television critics as a 'dim and simple-minded work of fiction'.
Produced by one of Obama’s biggest supporters in Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein, the movie was being said to be a political game changer.
However, the reviews of the film suggest that it is incapable of swaying even the most ambivalent voters. The producer by supervising the editing process ensured to play up Obama’s role in May 2011 commando assault in Pakistan that killed the leader of Al-Qaeda.
The film has also been criticized by fact-checkers who have pointed out several inaccuracies in the plot, including the idea that former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was not in favor of the operation. The President has campaigned on his role in the death of 9/11 mastermind frequently touting the statement, 'GM is alive and Osama bin Laden is dead.'
According to Entertainment Weekly film critic Ken Tucker, ‘The film casts the president as an 'edited-in-costar.' Another critic David Zurawick said that it had a clear political objective.
