Khalid Jadoon Chishty, the Muslim cleric who accused an 11-year-old Christian girl Rimsha Masih of burning religious texts was arrested by Police on charges of fabricating the evidence.

Witnesses claim Chishty planted torn pages of the Koran in Rimsha’s bag full of burned papers. There have been conflicting reports about the girl's age and mental state.

Local media report that she is 11 and suffers from Down's Syndrome.

She is being held in a high security prison under the country's controversial anti-blasphemy law. The girl's lawyer was to apply for bail at a hearing on Monday, but the case was adjourned until September 7 because of a lawyers' strike.

Human rights activists have been calling for her release and say the law discriminates against Pakistan's minority groups.
