London police are investigating a viral photo that has sparked online outrage amid claims officers laughed at a Muslim woman after she was attacked and her hijab ripped off.
According to eyewitnesses, the alleged attack occurred last week and began when three mothers asked a 25-year-old Muslim woman if she was hot in her headscarf. They then ripped off her hijab and beat her.
"They pulled my headscarf off and started punching and kicking me. One was dragging my head down while the others were hitting me. They were being so racist and using derogatory terms," the mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Evening Standard.
The photos taken at the scene have since gone viral with users claiming the police officers arrived at the scene and laughed along with the harassers at the victim.
Two women have been arrested on suspicion of common assault and a racially aggravated offense. They were released on bail and will return to court at a later date.
Police are aware of the photos and said they are investigating the incident.
“The victim has made a formal complaint in relation to the Met’s response to the incident. This will be investigated fully.”
Social media users are comparing the attack to police brutality in the United States, suggesting that racial profiling and police violence is not an epidemic unique to the U.S. alone.
