The pope’s on Twitter! Well, what next?
Pope Benedict XVI joined Twitter and within no time had over a million followers! Using the handle @pontifex and not very comfortable with using the iPad, he made his first tweet during his weekly public audience at the Vatican.
The tweet itself has been re-tweeted over 30,000 times.
Not only that the Pope has eight different accounts in different languages! Now we wonder if the Pope will personally be making all his tweets (it seems very unlikely) but the deed has been done!
This is a first for the Vatican, normally way behind in terms of technology.
So here are his first five tweets in English language!
Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.— Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) December 12, 2012

By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need— Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) December 12, 2012
How can faith in Jesus be lived in a world without hope?— Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) December 12, 2012
We can be certain that a believer is never alone. God is the solid rock upon which we build our lives and his love is always faithful— Benedict XVI (@Pontifex) December 12, 2012
Pope Benedict has made pre-approved tweets on other Vatican Twitter accounts since 2010, but this is the first time he has used this new personal account.
The social media company engineered the 12/12/12 event, encouraging the Vatican to personalize its multiple Twitter accounts.
Pope’s own account was announced on Dec 3rd, 2012, and the internet had been a-buzz since then with anticipation.
