Pope Francis was the first pontiff from the Americas. Then he was the first pope to send a tweet. Now, he’ll be the first pope to address Congress on September 24th, during his first visit to the United States.House Speaker John Boehner made the announcement Thursday, saying “In a time of global upheaval, the Holy Father’s message of compassion and human dignity has moved people of all faiths and backgrounds.” Boehner and 31% of lawmakers in the US identify as Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center.
The Pope will also meet with President Obama during his trip to D.C.
Obama shared that he was looking forward to meeting the Pope and said, “Like so many people around the world, I’ve been touched by his call to relieve the suffering, and to show justice and mercy and compassion to the most vulnerable… And like millions of Americans, I am very much looking forward to welcoming Pope Francis to the United States later this year.”
