Portugal Parliament Rejects Govt Austerity Plan

Portugal's parliament on Wednesday rejected the minority Socialist government's austerity measures in a vote that is likely to cause the administration's collapse.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates has said he will resign if the plan fails to clear parliament and Portugal would probably be forced to seek foreign aid. Socrates is due to meet President Anibal Cavaco Silva later Wednesday.

All opposition parties voted for a resolution to reject the measures that are part of the stability and growth programme for 2011-2014. Only the Socialists who have 97 seats in the 230-seat parliament, voted in favour of the measures. (Reporting by Daniel Alvarenga; writing by Andrei Khalip)
