Red Bull Stratos: Felix Baumgartner Breaks Records by Jumping from 24 Miles Above Earth (Video)

Austrian daredevilFelix Baumgartner made a record jump from a balloon hovering near the edge of space 24 miles above Earth. He made the highest and fastest jump in history after ascending by a helium balloon to an altitude of 39 kilometers, reaching a maximum speed measured at 1342km/h, or Mach 1.24.

More than 70 engineers, scientists and physicians worked for five years alongside Felix on the project called Red Bull Stratos.

Baumgartner jumped from a skateboard sized shelf outside a capsule carried by an enormous balloon.

His body pierced the atmosphere at speeds topping 700 miles per hour appearing to achieve another of his goals: to become the first skydiver to break the speed of sound.
