Republican Peter king is furious and is deeply worried about ‘national security’ following the revelation of secret NSA surveillance programs.
It seems King is much more concerned about national issues and less bothered regarding individual fundamental rights which is why he is after the reporters and journalists who published the NSA exposé.
While talking to CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday night, Peter King demanded punishment for all those who published stories of leaked classified information. He said, “If they willingly knew that this was classified information, I think action should be taken, especially on something of this magnitude.”
“I think on something of this magnitude, there is an obligation both moral but also legal, I believe, against a reporter disclosing something that would so severely compromise national security.”
Well, as far as security is concerned, internationally it was being compromised through secret spying programs like PRISM and tools like Boundless Informant. We would like to know what Peter King has to say about that, or is he not concerned with what the U.S. is doing by snooping on other countries?
Ex-CIA agent Edward Snowden was the whistleblower who provided top secret documents to the Guardian and the Washington Post reporters. And then the news was widely reported by a number of journalists nationally and internationally.
Glenn Geenwald from the Guardian was probably the first columnist to break the NSA ‘snooping’ news. On hearing Peter King’s demand, Greenwald tweeted:
Is is true, as I was just told, that Peter King on CNN called for criminal prosecution of journalists reporting the NSA stories?— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) June 12, 2013
It’s true Mr. Greenwald. You can watch the video above for confirmation.
