Restaurant Workers Fired For Supporting 'A Day Without Immigrants'

“(They’re) upset they stood for something they felt was necessary so the community would stand together, and they got terminated for that.”

Workers of restaurant in Oklahoma didn’t know they would have to pay a heavy price for skipping work to show solidarity for “A Day Without Immigrants”.

A dozen employees at I Don’t Care Bar and Grill in Catoosa lost their jobs after they took a day off to show support for immigrants.

The owner of the restaurant fired the employees over a text message reading, “You and your family are fired. I hope you enjoyed your day off, and you can enjoy many more. Love you.”

The employees who remained unnamed are Latinos, who thought it was important for them to show support for immigrants. However, they didn’t expect the owner to take such a harsh step. They had been working at the restaurant since it opened two yearsago.

A friend of the employees said during an interview, “They feel like they’ve been unfairly terminated. (They’re) upset they stood for something they felt was necessary so the community would stand together, and they got terminated for that.”

But the workers, who are now looking for more jobs, say they are not demotivated by the harsh step and they say they will keep supporting immigrants who are working and living in the U.S.

“Immigrants are important to the nation,” said the friend.

According to the owner of the restaurant, Bill McNally, he has zero tolerance for no show/no call incidents. In the past he has fired several employees who have violated the policy.

Following the incident, the restaurant posted on their Facebook that they were looking for replacements.

Recently, businesses around the country came together to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration reform proposals. From restaurants to grocery stores and even schools and businesses closed their doors today to Americans to show what would happen ifTrump boosted ICE's power.

The protest, billed “A Day Without Immigrants,” was observed across the country.
