Rick Santorum Thinks The Pope Should Leave “Science To The Scientists”

Conveniently forgetting that the Pope, unlike Santorum, is trained in science.

It’s important for people to critique their own beliefs, their religion, and the institutions of such. True faith is arguably earned through questioning.

But devout Catholic Rick Santorum’s recent push-back against the Pope was…ill-conceived, to say the least.

Santorum

Earlier this year, Pope Francis--- believed by many to be the most progressive Pope in history---recognized the problem of human-caused climate change, environmental degradation, and the ensuing impact on the poor. This was followed by a three month church campaign to raise the issue of environmental stewardship.

Many conservatives took umbrage at this, seeing as they don’t even believe in climate change. Ohio Speaker John A. Boehner, for instance, criticized the Obama administration for its “job killing” environmental agenda.

It's interesting how church leaders are only ever "infallible" when their ideologies are in line with churchgoers. Who's the boss here, anyway?

Now Santorum, too, has spoken, suggesting that the Pope should

“[leave] the science to the scientists.”

Conveniently forgetting that the Pope, unlike Santorum himself, does have training in Chemistry.

“The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science.”

Would that extend to, I don’t know, abortion as well?

What’s more, if science should be left to the scientists, should we not take into consideration that the vast majority of scientists recognize human-caused climate change?

Santorum doesn’t think so. He believes the Pope should stick to his moral authority. However, he thinks that field-specific limitations should not extend to politicians, who, he says, “make public policy with regard to the environmental policy.”

I.e. People who are untrained, ignorant, and in full denial of pressing realities (Santorum calls these “speculative science”) have the right to decide.

But the Pope? He should keep mum unless he’s touting the ideologies of the Christian Right.
