Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a right wing Hindu group in India has claimed that lovers should not celebrate Valentine’s Day since it is a Western tradition and ‘blindly results in rape and other sexual assaults.’

As if the controversial statements from politicians and clerics blaming women for sexual assault were not enough, the connection of rape with the ill-effects of celebrating Valentine’s Day (which is just round the corner) simply adds to the fact that people can be really absurd and unreasonable with this sensitive topic.

Manoj Solanki, the state convener of HJS told a press conference in India that its cadre would distribute printed material such as pamphlets in public places and institutions including railway stations, bus stations and colleges and “demonstrate the ill-effects of Valentine’s Day”.

An even more ridiculous statement was given by Solanki in which he claimed that the Bhartiya (Indian) youth is turning towards indulgence and the sale of contraceptives peaks on this (Valentine’s Day) which leads to a rise in incidents of rape and atrocities.

Valentine’s Day is indeed a Western tradition and is not allowed to be celebrated in certain cultures and religions. But it certainly doesn’t mean that it should be used as a tool to downgrade western values and connect it with something as heinous as rape.

Of course this bizarre statement has generated negative feedback on the internet:
