Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin thought she was making a point when she was being sarcastic about President Barack Obama and his policy towards Syria. She not only made some eyebrow-raising remarks on the civil-war stricken country but also tried to make, quite ironically, a joke out of their religious beliefs while speaking at the annual meeting of the “Faith” and “Freedom” Coalition.
She said, “Militarily, where is our commander in chief?”We’re talking now more new interventions. I say, until we know what we’re doing, until we have a commander and chief who knows what he’s doing, well, in these radical Islamic countries, who aren’t even respecting basic human rights, where both sides are slaughtering each other as they scream over an arbitrary red line, ‘Allah Akbar,’ I say until we have someone who knows what they’re doing, I say let Allah sort it out.”
It’s true that certain elements in Syria, more specifically the rebels are violating fundamental human rights. They are in a civil, almost proxy, war stricken zone and have been in this state for more than two years now. More than 90, 000 people have been killed in the country including a considerable amount of innocent civilians who didn’t shout “Allah Akbar” and slaughtered each other.
Not that Palin is totally wrong. There are people who slaughter and do the most gruesome things imaginable. But they don’t necessarily have to chant religious slogans. For example the atrocities in Iraq and especially in Abu Gharaib prison. Palin would know better. After all, the commander-in-chief was from her political party.
