School Bus Crashes Near Dorney Park; Injuries

A school bus has crashed leaving the Dorney Park amusement park in Lehigh County, Pa.

It happened just after 6:00 p.m. Friday May 11, 2012 on the ramp to Interstate 78 from Hamilton Boulevard in Lower Macungie Township.

The bus collided with a car Friday evening near the on-ramp to Interstate 78, on the border of South Whitehall and Lower Macungie townships.Authorities say the bus had 30 students aboard and was among three taking a group of Pennridge High School freshmen home from a class trip to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom. School officials say one adult and 13 students were taken to a hospital but their injuries are minor.

One of the buses carrying 30 students tried to make a turn unto 78 East. State Police say he had a green light, but not the right of way to make turns.

Police say the bus driver will be cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

Pennridge Principal, Thomas Creeden said in a statement that none of the injuries were life threatening, but those injured were being transported as a precaution to local hospitals including Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest and St. Luke's in Allentown.

Creeden says one girl had a pretty good bump on the head, but they were fortunate none of the injuries appeared to be serious.

Creeden says the bus was one of several chartered through the Levy Bus Company for the trip.

"One girl had a pretty good bump on her head," said Dr. Creeden. "We're fortunate the injuries do not appear to be serious."
