With the election of Donald Trump, white supremacy somehow seems to have become a new normal.
Members of Ku Klux Klan are throwing victory parades, odious white nationalists are giving lectures at prominent universities and the neo-Nazi alt-right movement showed its true colors by chanting “Heil Trump” at a recent conference.
So, how did we get to this?
“Late Night Show” host Seth Meyers recently shed some light on the matter, wagging a finger at the mainstream media for normalizing the “alt-right.”
“Since the election of Donald Trump and the ascension of his right-hand man, Steve Bannon, there have been fears about the rise of white supremacy,” Meyers exclaimed. “Yet the media seems to be bending over backwards to normalize the so-called alt-right movement.”
To prove his point, he gave the example of headlines comparing Nazis to hipsters.
“Hey! Media! What are you doing?” Meyers asked. “How do you confuse hipsters with Nazis? Nazis like to invade other people’s territory and turn it into a utopia for the white race, whereas hipsters…”
At that point, Meyers seemed to have realized some similarities, though he continued, “But still!”
He also called on the media to retire the term “alt-right” and just call them what they really are: Nazis.
“If it looks like a duck and talks like a duck and steps like a goose, it’s a Nazi!” he added. “This is America! And if we’ve ever done anything we can all be proud of, it was defeating the Nazis. Get your shit together, media! Calling Nazis and white supremacists the alt-right is like calling O.J. Simpson a cutlery enthusiast.”
