Ships Leave Gulf Oil Spill Site As Bonnie Nears

Engineers prepared to leave their watch over BP's busted well Friday as ships and rig workers evacuated the Gulf of Mexico ahead of Tropical Storm Bonnie. The experimental cap that's contained the crude for a week will be left closed, even if the undersea robots monitoring the well's integrity leave. The only way BP would know if the cap failed would be satellite and aerial views of oil gushing to the surface, National Incident Commander Thad Allen told reporters Friday. The chief of the U.S. oil spill response said he's confident the cap will hold and predicted it would be at least 48 hours before ships could return to the site.
