Following this week’s presidential election result, there has been a drastic surge in reports of racist, xenophobic violence — and this time, two TV show actors were caught in the backlash.
Comedy series "Silicon Valley" stars Kumail Nanjiani and Thomas Middleditch, who are both outspoken supporters of Hillary Clinton, recounted in a series of tweets their ordeal of being harassed by Trump supporters while they were relaxing in a Los Angeles bar.
According to Nanjiani, who plays software engineer Dinesh Chugtai in the show, a bunch of young men in their 20s approached them while they were having drinks in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles and proceeded to tell them how they have got the wrong impression of Trump.
Despite the fact Nanjiani and Middleditch (who plays programmer Richard Hendricks in "Silicon Valley") said they were not interested in talking about politics, the men kept getting in their faces. The interaction soon escalated into harassment when the men started calling the two actors “cucks” — a pejorative, alt-right term for people who are wimps or losers.
Was at a bar last night with @Middleditch. At the end of the night, 2 white dudes, 20's, who'd been there for hours came up to us.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) November 12, 2016
Out with @kumailn; for no reason two dudes came at us with Trump right wing shit, calling us "cucks". Never in my life. I hate this. Week 1.— Thomas Middleditch (@Middleditch) November 12, 2016
I go "Hey we don't wanna discuss politics right now." His friends goes "oh they're cucks." Then starts yelling at us. "CUCKS CUCKS CUCKS!"— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) November 12, 2016
At this point, the bouncer runs over, grabs them, kicks them out. The bartender is awesome & apologetic. Thomas & I are stunned.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) November 12, 2016
However, the two stars were able to escape violence when the bouncer of the bar grabbed the men and threw them out. The hostile encounter left the two actors shocked.
“The bartender is awesome & apologetic. Thomas & I are stunned,” wrote Nanjiani.
Soon after they posted their encounter online, they soon began receiving replies, some from people who claimed they were lying.
Btw, "cuck" is an Alt Right term. Look it up, it's not positive.— Thomas Middleditch (@Middleditch) November 12, 2016
Middleditch has now dubbed the bar “gentrification central.”
“I can’t imagine what it must be like to be someone who looks like me in other parts,” wrote Nanjiani, who is Pakistani-American.
However he has not lost hope and tells his followers to step up to racism.
We can't let hate/racism/bigotry/sexism be normalized. If something happens, be safe, but let it be known we won't stand for this.— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) November 12, 2016
