Kim Jong-un has been the object of much speculation-about his politics, his grip on power and the number of nuclear warheads he commands to threaten US -but this week attention turned to an even more obscure side of portly dictator: his relationship with a glamorous and married, North Korean pop star. The mystery woman pictured accompanying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a string of official engagements is previously married and is the very same girl, who his father banned him from seeing nearly 10 years ago.
Known as Hyon Song-wol, the attractive pop star used to front the Bochonbo Electronic Music Band, shot to success on musical charts with hits such as Excellent Horse-Like Lady, Footsteps of Soldiers, I Love Pyongyang, She is a Discharged Soldier and We are Troops of the Party.
According to information revealed by South Korean intelligence the couple became romantically involved a decade ago after Kim Jong-un returned from an elite private school in the Swiss city of Berne. Judging from her position between Kim and his most senior generals and his aides, it can be said that she is a person of high importance.
However, things were not favorable for the now Korean leader during the reign of his father Kim Jong-Il, who died in December last year, reportedly ordered him to end the relationship. It has also been disclosed that the two have known each other since they were in their teens and rumors about the two having an affair has been circulating among Pyongyang’s top elite.
The singer, whose popularity shot to fame in 2005, is believed to have been married to an officer in the North Korean army with whom she had a baby. According to South Korean media reports the woman is Kim’s younger sister Yo-Jong, who is believed to have studied in Switzerland during the 1990s.
It is also being believed that there was little chance the mystery woman was Kim’s partner, given the fact that country’s past first ladies have rarely made public appearance with leaders in the past.
But, with Kim Jong-un as the current ruler of North Korea there are many surprises one can look forward to in times to come.
