Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena was enraged after fans at an Enrique Iglesias concert behaved in a rather uncivilized manner.
The 40-year-old Latino singer performed Dec. 20 at a rugby stadium in Colombo during his “Love and Sex” world tour when a number of female fans ran onto the stage. Some of the women even flung their underwear at the artist.
Sirisena, who called the fans “uncivilized,” said that concert organizers should be “whipped with toxic stingray tails.” He said that while he does not wish to subject fans to fines and punishment, he wants the event organizers to pay for what happened at the concert.
“This is most uncivilized behavior that goes against our culture,” the president told a public meeting in the eastern district of Ampara. “I don't advocate that these uncivilized women who removed their brassieres should be beaten with toxic stingray tails, but those who organized such an event should be.”
Concert organizers haven't commented.
According to Sri Lankan culture and society, public displays of affection are not welcomed, and several couples have been arrested by their police for kissing their partners in public places.
