A London-based animator Dom Deltoro’s MacBook Pro was taken away from him on February 4 this year. But the thieves did not know that there was a Hidden App installed in the laptop. It is a $15 Mac Software that comes with the notebook which enables the owner to track the stolen machine next time it connects to the internet.
The application secretly records through its built-in camera and takes screen grabs of the people (mostly the thieves) who use the laptop. Dom Deltoro’s MacBook was detected online in late March but there was little he could do about it.
His possession was in Tehran.
Deltoro informed the police but all they could do for him was to inform the Interpol. To retrieve the laptop from Iran seemed next to impossible. The aggrieved owner therefore did what tech savvy people do nowadays; he took to social media for help. He created a Tumblr account named ‘Dom’s Laptop is in Iran’ and dedicated it to the pictures and screenshots of the people in Iran who were using his laptop.
As of now, his account has become password protected. The possible reason behind it could be Deltoro’s concern that the family using his MacBook might not have anything to do with the theft.
A similar incident occurred in 2011 when a guy called Joshua Kaufman’s Macbook got stolen and he made an account on Tumblr called This Guy Has My MacBook. But Kaufman was much luckier than Deltoro because he was able to track down his thief and get his machine back from him.
Technology is just awesome. Even if Deltoro was not able to get his laptop back, at least he got to know about its whereabouts in Iran. Though we do feel sorry for Dom’s loss, finding the stolen MacBook in a country like Iran is quite intriguing if you come to think of it, isn’t it?
